For a business that began with only three employees, Jamestown Mattress continues to see success as a locally owned and operated company.

Last month, the company, owned by the Pullan family, signed a multimillion-dollar, five-year contract with the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York.

"The Pullan family, along with all the employees of Jamestown Mattress are extremely excited and honored to have this opportunity," said Jim Pullan Jr. of Jamestown Mattress. "We look forward to serving the State University of New York colleges across the state for many years to come."

Ex-Im Bank Boosts Manufacturing & Jobs in the Region

Written by Todd J. Tranum, President and CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce & Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier

The President and Chairman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States says there are two types of manufacturers, “Those who are exporting, and those who wish they were exporting.”

Fred Hochberg addressed over one hundred business people this past week during Congressman Tom Reed’s 2015 Manufacturing Summit at Jamestown Community College.  Hochberg said the Ex-Im Bank’s role is to help companies reduce risk and expand opportunities, pointing out that 95% of the world’s customers live outside the United States.

Only 1% of US companies are currently exporting, and jobs in companies that export pay better than those that don’t, he added. He also noted that Ex-Im Bank supported more than 164,000 American jobs in fiscal year 2014.

“The global middle class is growing by 200-million a year,” Hochberg pointed out.  “Those are people who want the high quality goods we manufacture in the United States.”

The Ex-Im Bank helps to reduce the risk for US companies to export by providing Export Credit Insurance to guard against buyers who may not pay, and a Working Capital Guarantee to assist with cash flow for companies that may not get paid for 60 days.

Reed supports the Ex-Im Reauthorization Act which is now being shepherded through Congress, saying it is crucial for small, local manufacturers.  We support the Congressman in these efforts as several large and medium size manufacturers in our region directly benefit from the resources provided by the Ex-Im Bank. Many suppliers to these manufacturers indirectly benefit from the Ex-Im Bank. With that, many jobs in the region rely on the Ex-Im Bank.

The summit included manufacturers from all across the Southern Tier, Western New York, and Northwestern Pennsylvania, as well as Congressmen Chris Collins and Glen Thompson, whose districts are adjacent to Reed’s.

The Brand Called You

By Justin Hanft Dream It Do It Coordinator

Chautauqua County Dream It Do It kicked off their summer internship program during a one day training orientation held at the Manufacturing Technology Institute at JCC.  With over 20+ interns, the program is designed to increase the skilled workforce pipeline in manufacturing and help students capture their learning during their internship placements, understand the importance of a good solid work ethic, recognize the significance of communication from multiple voices, strengthen their on-line professional presence and strive for excellence in building The Brand Called You.

Sponsors of the event were Cindy Aronson Training and Curt Anderson from the Small Business Development Center at JCC who led workshops touching on these key critical business skills.

According to Cindy, to stand out and prosper in today's new world of work, you have to build-and continually sharpen-the brand called YOU.  Students discovered in her dynamic workshop two essential ingredients that will help them powerfully impact their workplace and how to unleash the 'game changer' that ensures others will remember their brand of excellence throughout their internship and beyond!
